Welcome Thomas Fulbrook, January's featured Provider of the Month!
Thomas Fulbrook is a therapy provider who turned to thera-LINK as a safe and reliable solution for the teletherapy aspect of his practice. Thomas is a thoughtful and caring therapist, and we are overjoyed to have him in the thera-LINK family.
What is your name and the name of your practice? How long have you been in practice? My name is Thomas Fulbrook and my practice is Insightful Living Inc. I have been practicing in Texas for the past 3 years and Nevada for the past 11 years.
What do you do for fun? What hobbies do you do? Tell us about you outside of your "provider" role.I love spending time with my incredible wife and family, including our playful Bichon Frises. When I take time to explore my creative side, I enjoy practicing classical guitar.
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankyl. Logotherapy resonates with me in that we choose how we respond to the things that happen to us and aligning with our valued meaning.
Favorite TV Show/Movie?Defending your Life of definitely one of my favorite movies. I love the theme in the move of overcoming fears and personal growth.
Where do you practice (state, etc..) and what areas do you specialize in?
My primary practice location is Frisco, Texas, however, I continue a practice in Las Vegas, Nevada. I travel between the two states and utilize thera-LINK for a number of my clients. My specialty area of practice includes supporting parents who have experienced the loss of a child. This has been my passion for over a decade and the subject matter focus of my doctoral dissertation.
Why did you go into your profession? My interest in becoming a therapist began when I was a young man. Providing a safe place for others to explore their personal growth and cope with life experiences was a perfect fit for my personality and strengths.
Academically, I was guided by my interests in the impact of biopsychosocial variables upon physical and mental health, which motivated me to complete my Ph.D. in Health Psychology.
What are you passionate about in your practice? It can be very difficult for the bereaved to reach out for help and support. So much of the lived experiences of those in grief may be misunderstood, leaving this group isolated and underserved. My passion is focused on providing a safe place for those who are facing their worst days.
Early in my career I worked in a level one trauma center and pediatric unit. The need for compassionate grief care became obvious and while I was already passionate regarding bereaved parents, the need was reinforced through these experiences.
How long have you been doing online sessions with your clients?Approximately 3 years.
Why did you start using thera-LINK to see clients?I had tried a number of remote therapy solutions and found thera-LINK to be the easiest for my patients to use. The platform is very stable and the developers are constantly looking to enhance functionality. I would add that support is wonderful and extremely responsive.
Do your clients find that online sessions offer them similar results as coming in to an office? Do they prefer online sessions or in office? Was it a difficult adjustment for them?
So many of my clients love the convenience of being able to connect remotely using a platform that is secure and easy to use. While I prefer face to face sessions, thera-LINK provides a great option for those who may not be able to access mental health services. Overall, the adjustment was not difficult for most of my clients.
What would you tell someone just starting out with an online option for their clients? Any tips/tricks or things you've learned along the way?
I have recommended thera-LINK to a number of colleagues and have helped a few get up to speed. Most importantly, providers need to be well versed on the security requirements for their own internal network and the limits of use based on specific insurance providers. I would recommend that providers stay current with the requirements and security concerns associated with teletherapy.
Where do you work from mostly? (i.e. home office, beach, actual office where you see clients in person as well?)Most of my sessions are initiated from my practice office. This is the most controlled environment regarding ensuring privacy and the security of the communications. While I use thera-LINK several times a week, most of my client interactions are face to face, in my office.
Did you purchase any new equipment when you embarked in an online practice? Either way, what do you use for your sessions? (i.e. laptop/tablet, webcam, headset, big monitor)
I try to upgrade my equipment every few years so there was no additional hardware required. I prefer to use a headset and webcam, which is pretty standard for most providers. My recommendation to my clients include investing in a headset as well.
